Street Heat was formed as a community project in 1991 and is now a popular and successful gigging band playing many different venues, such as carnivals (Nice, Berlin, Notting Hill,  Bridgwater and the 'Battle of Flowers' in Jersey), festivals (Glastonbury, Beautiful Days, Lynton and Lynmouth Music and Arts, Sidmouth and Exmouth), fetes, weddings as well as indoor gigs such as World Beats Night at Timepiece Nightclub in Exeter. One of Street Heat's favourite gigs for the awesome atmosphere is a busking session at the Sidmouth Folk Festival, on Wednesday evening of the festival week, in the Market Square. The band has played on the BBC''s ''Generation Game'' in January 1996 and was featured in a documentary on the subject of ''entertainers'', by Westcountry Television in September 1997. More recently, Street Heat have supported Will Young in one of his concerts in Devon and Ska Cubano at The Phoenix, Exeter.

Street Heat routinely plays a number of gigs for charity throughout the year, such as the RNLI's Annual Ball in Exmouth. For a number of years the band has contributed to the Francisco Royas School in Arequipa, Peru, enabling the education of at least one street child for a year at a time. At an AGM in September 1997 members of Street Heat expressed their willingness to continue their connection with the Francisco Royas School and expanding their cash donations from gig fees to other charities and by busking. They also provide one-off workshops for schools and out of school clubs, for example, the Knight Club in Exeter for young people with autistic spectrum disorders. Street Heat are well known for bringing heaps of energy, excitement and fun when playing samba. Their costumes add another dimension to the performance and they are members of the Notting Hill MAS Band which represents carnival arts and masquarade performers.

Members meet up once a week for practice in central Exeter and welcomes new members, especially during the winter months when they are less busy with gigs. The band also runs workshops which introduces new talent. Street Heat have a child protection policy in place and has an age range of players from 14 to 70. The band can loan out instruments long-term.
