Edun Ara - bloco de carnaval

Ẹdùn Ará - bloco de carnaval is a percussion, song & dance performance based project that reflects the African heritage found in Brazilian & Cuban culture. We draw on traditional artforms & with great respect to its origins, we present a contemporary performance

We run workshops that culminate in a costumed parade and/or stage performance. The workshops are usually held over a weekend and participants of the project range from individuals who have an interest in drumming or dance through to groups of people from a community Samba group.

Parading at Luton Carnival

Edun Ara began in 2005 as one of the many workshops organised by One Voice Music*. Since then it has grown in popularity and become a project that develops year after year.

The Edun Ara website is an important aspect of this development. There are on-line resources that help participants learn the repertoire including notation, audio and video samples and a practise faciltiy with MangoDrum.

So come and take part, contribute to the special energy the project creates, make new friends and have lots of fun!

FAQ's

Kinetika Bloco

The Kinetika Bloco’s100 young performers take you by storm with their unique new British Carnival sound. Their exuberant mix: brass, percussion, dynamic dancers and extraordinary costumes combine in a roof-raising extravaganza with a decidedly London edge. The Kinetika Bloco draws its influences from Trinidad, the Caribbean, Brazil, West and Southern Africa, India, New Orleans jazz, Funk and Hip Hop.

In the last few years, the Kinetika Bloco represented London as part of the 'Beijing 2008' Olympic Cultural Festival, as well as performing at the London Jazz Festival, Thames Festival, The South Bank and at the Unveiling of the Nelson Mandela statue at Parliament Square, Aug 2007.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown said at the Unveiling of Nelson Mandela's statue: “You were amazing–Nelson Mandela wishes me to pass onto you that he thought you were enchanting!”

The Kinetika Bloco’s mission is to give young people from all backgrounds a participatory creative experience, a sense of belonging and to provide leadership opportunities.

Kinetika are keen to focus on positive examples of just how much can be achieved with young people, from whatever background through long term engagement. Kinetika has been building The Kinetika Bloco over the last eight years with participants coming from across London to attend a subsidised open-access Summer School at the South Bank Centre where we create new music, dance and costumes. Members are trained to become advocates and teachers (Trainees) for the Bloco, hence creating career pathways.

The Kinetika Bloco is available for booking for seasonal parties, festivals, carnivals, corporate events and launches. We can supply a small performance group for an intimate event up to a full scale carnival spectacular.

The Kinetika Bloco is also available to lead workshops (INSET’s) for schools, colleges or community groups, giving you an exciting carnival taster in music and dance led by a professional team and the Kinetika Bloco Trainees.  These workshops can lead to the creation of local groups similar to the Kinetika Bloco.

“Thanks indeed to all the Bloco for a brilliant performance on Saturday, bringing so much colour and energy to our event. I think it was down to you that the sun was eventually persuaded to come out!

Joëlle McNichol, Seventeen Events for LSBU Summer Fete

“Thank you so much for coming over to see us and being the midwives in the delivery of another Bloco into the world!!  The feedback from the kids and teachers here has been out of this world!

Richard Brown, Arts Development Manager, Comberton Village College

“Year 8 are still buzzing!!!!! Everyone in college is really inspired by the carnival arts theme!  Thank you again for making this all possible”

Ann Cockerham, Headteacher, Rye College

UK Centre for Carnival Arts

This unique online hub has been built as your portal to all things carnival. Carnival has been a huge part of my life since the 80s and we hope this website goes someway to demonstrating the word, sound and power of carnival, carnival arts and its relatively unsung hero’s from around the world.

To me carnival speaks the language of the streets and in doing so speaks for us all. Carnival has the power to transform lives and has the potential to reposition towns and cities whilst providing an appropriate yet relevant platform showcasing the talents of our rich, diverse and creative communities.

Carnival in the UK and around the world transcends race, class and creed and has the power to unite and bring people together whilst passing on histories, skills and knowledge reaching places and parts that other art forms cannot reach.

If you want to be inspired why not join us, share your carnival experiences and become part of a carnival rich and vibrant economy and community.
